Piezometers

Geotechnical monitoring involves using many geotechnical sensors, each designed for specific function and usage in all types of conditions. These monitoring sensors are curated to be extremely reliable, durable, and weather-proof in many conditions.

PIEZOMETER

Slim Size

This piezo is specifically designed for measuring pore water pressure in small diameter boreholes and standpipes. It is made of stainless steel with a built-in thermistor for temperature measurement and surge arrester for protection from lightning. For an easy cable connection a glass to metal solder pin connector is provided. The sensor is hermetically sealed with a vacuum of around 0.001 Torr inside it. A low air entry value ceramic flat filter is provided with a grain size of 40-60 microns unless specified otherwise.

Heavy Duty

To measure pore water pressure in the soil, earth/rock-fill foundations and concrete structures, we have EPP-30V. It is a vibrating wire piezometer that is made of stainless steel and hermetically sealed under a vacuum of 0.001 Torr. These sensors have a built-in thermistor for temperature measurement and a surge arrester for protection from lightning. A glass to metal seal solder pin connector is provided for an easy cable connection. Using the grouting technique these piezometers can be mounted at different levels in a borehole.

Low Pressure

This is a low pressure sensor, broadly used for settlement measurement and water level/water pressure measurement in boreholes. It has a diameter of 30 mm which is conveniently designed to measure water level, and water pressure in boreholes. This pressure sensor is used for applications in which maximum hydrostatic head (height of water level above piezometer location) is less than 7 m over the sensor diaphragm.

CPT Push-In

This unit is a push-in type vibrating wire piezometer, designed to measure pore water pressure in soft soil/clays and landfills. It has a pointed cone at one end and drill/CPT rod threads at the other end. When threaded onto our CPT rods, the piezometer can be pushed into soft soil directly where grouting or pre-drilling is not required. The cable attached to the piezometer is passed through the CPT casing rods unit target depths are reached. Thread options are EW drill rod thread or M28.

See our ‘Cone Penetration Testing’ page for CPT investigations.

Electrical Uplift Pressure Sensor

Uplift pressure measuring device consists of a perforated/non-perforated pipe of 50 mm dia of adequate strength. The pipe is inserted in a drilled hole in the foundation from the instrumentation gallery to the required depth.

The uplift pressure sensor incorporates the latest vibrating wire technology to provide remote digital readout of fluid and/or water pressure in standpipes, bore holes and embankments. It is similar to the Heavy-duty piezometer except that instead of the special filter, a 25 mm BSP adaptor is provided for the pipe connection. The water oozing through internal pores or seams in rock formations of dam foundations, mass concrete /foundation soil of structures, reclaimed land soil etc. percolates upward through the pipe to the sensor

Open Standpipe

The open standpipe is used for measuring ground water level and its variation with time. It consists of a pipe that is sealed along its entire length and installed in a borehole such that it is open to water flow at bottom and open to atmosphere at the top. The intake is a slotted pipe covered with geo-textile material, to prevent soil particles from clogging the borehole.

The depth to the water level in the standpipe can be measured by either monitoring it manually using a dip water level meter into the pipe, or by installing a Diver unit and periodically downloading the data, or via Telemetry options such as a 4/20mA sensor connected to a Switch logger unit. The level of water in such a borehole or well corresponds to the water table at that location. The level of water in such a borehole or well corresponds to the water table at that location.

The PVC pipe can be designed to any length. standard PVC lengths come in 6m. standard 32 mm diameter standpipes can be installed using our CPT Rig, this makes for a fast and easy install for both standpipe and no drilling mess as a result.

Water Level Meter

The water level indicator (Dip meter) is used to measure the depth of groundwater in standpipes, boreholes, and wells. The unit is light in weight, battery operated and gives accurate and quick readings with an audible signal. The tape used is a flat, high tensile, non-stretch with suitable markings.
